Over the last few weeks I have watched: It (2017), 1408 (2007), The Mist (2007), Silver Linings Playbook (2012), Lincoln (2012), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017), Battle of the Sexes (2017) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017).

What is most interesting to me about this movie is that it is a very watchable, enjoyable horror movie that is high quality but conventional and very watchable but not a cult/artistic horror film. It has some jump scares but relies more on creepiness and could even be more of a coming of age comedy rather than horror film.

I had a bit of a dive into Stephen King. This is one of the more interesting adaptations although it feels like it falls flat at the end.

The Mist
This movie is a torture-fest for viewers. Are you willing to put up with people arguing for the sake of arguing despite dire circumstances? Are you ready to not have any character development pay off and leave the viewing in a bleak cloud of depression? No? You can skip this because it holds up exactly as it did when it came out.

Silver Linings Playbook
I used to really like this movie a lot, but five years later it just feels tired. I used to like Jennifer Lawrence as an actor but over the years she has been less interesting see on screen while many of the other actresses of her generation have been very impressive. The directing feels aged over the years, first viewings felt exciting and different, now it looks like an older movie.

Lincoln
My memory of seeing this in the theater was hearing the loud snores of an older man a few rows in front of me. I don't blame him. This still feels like three different movies cut together, although knowing what it is going into the viewing made me appreciate even more the fun of James Spader's performance.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle
I am a big fan of the first Kingsman movie so in preparation for this one I rewatched the first one as well as a few older James Bond movies. There are a couple areas of the movie that don't quite land like the princess girlfriend, but there is a whole lot that work wonderfully. Colin Firth is amazing playing a complicated role of an old man with the mind of a child.

Battle of the Sexes
I had a feeling just from the description of this movie that I would like it and that was somehow underselling the movie for me. Emma Stone and Steve Carell fall perfectly into their real life characters. The movie is shot like a book of perfectly composed photography and directed with a touch that juggles tone, period, humor, and tennis action. This is one of the best movies of the year in a year of great movies.

Blade Runner 2049
I'm not the biggest Blade Runner fan, but I liked this movie for expanding the world in interesting ways. The special effects shots of the cities are spectacular and the score reverberating. It's a well made movie, but I'm not sure how much I would be willing to would rewatch it as much as other great movies of the year.
