Youth in Revolt

I hadn't seen this in a few years and I was happy by how funny it is and the strength of the different set pieces. The one odd thing about it is that the DVD cover looks like it is for a direct to Netflix movie that is a disappointing experience and doesn't really encapsulate the quality and fun of the movie. Fortunately for the movie the poster that is used on wikipedia is not as bad as the one on the DVD box that has Zach Galifianakis and Justin Long on the ends giving "this is a wacky movie" looks with their eyes.

Ant-Man

This brings me up to date in my MCU+ before going to see Deadpool. It's a fun movie although some of the dialogue could be more funny and the use of Thomas the Train at the end is unsettling. I really enjoy the use of Michael Pena's character for setting up the first heist and Ant-Man's Avengers inclusion at the end. I like that it's a smaller scale Marvel movie where a city doesn't get destroyed and we get to know a character a little more. I especially enjoy that the step-father character's arc makes him a character to root for and appreciate the peace that is earned between his and Paul Rudd's character.

This is a bit shorter than other features at 54 minutes but it's a documentary I find so fascinating that I think it deserves feature recognition on here. It is the narative free revisiting of the day of the O.J. Simpson white Bronco chase through L.A. and the other very prominent events in sports that happened on the same day. It brought me back in time to my concerns over the impending baseball strike and fandom of David Cone and Ken Griffey Jr. who are featured in an at bat that punctuates the action in the O.J. event. I had gone to bed while my family was watching the car chase on TV, but other events like the World Cup in the US that summer captivated me and my friends. I also disctinctly remember having the Sports Illustrated with the New York Rangers cover. I have never really liked hockey but that was a huge event in sports that year that those fans have not experienced since then.

Dr. Strangelove

I mostly watched this as something soothing, a favorite that puts my brain in a nice space, so i could do some writing, but it also fit in with the Kubrick war movie theme of a few days ago. The military attacks the airforce base in the middle of the movie and Kubrick placed the camera behind some foliage to film the action as though it was a documentary and the camera operator was ducking for cover. As many times as I have seen this movie (It might be one of my top five all time favorites) I still get surprised by different lines that give me a good laugh and this viewing it was during a very serious part of the movie where the British RAF officer says in a straight tone "Listen, Colonel Bat Guano, if that is your real name."
