Three Thors Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Over the last couple of weeks with a newborn I still have been able to see a few new movies, luckily they were all enjoyable in different ways. I saw Thor: Ragnarok, Rough Night, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Thor smash. Thor not get his own movie. Thor okay with this.

Thor: Ragnarok

This was perhaps the most enjoyable movie-going experience of the year for me. Great special effects, humor, writing, and all in the MCU. This is a winner for me, front to back. A new aesthetic for the Thor character is created, a kind of 1980's arcade mixed with current day coloration and a Mark Mothersbaugh synth score that brings him back to his Devo days.

Noms: Taika Waititi for directing, Special Effects and stunts for the film, Score and music for the film.

Letterboxd review.

Rough Night

It's not Shakespeare, but it is a fun movie. It's a perfect comedy for a Saturday night when the newborn can't see far enough to the TV and is too young to understand the jokes.

Noms: none.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Martin McDonaugh bounces back after the less than ground breaking Seven Psychopaths to give a very nuanced character story of revenge, crime, rape culture and a touch of police violence and racism. It's absolutely captivating, funny, heavy and charming.

Noms: Martin McDonaugh for writing and directing, Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell for acting, Ben Davis for cinematrography.

Letterboxd review.

All '07, '12 and '17 in film.
