Never Stop Always Watching
Last night I visited Red Box and rented Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016).
This is a fun movie with a lot of great jokes and several pretty good satirical songs. The songs are pretty good for the satire, however, they're amazing for their music production. The jokes are great although it really felt like Andy Samberg's character wasn't 100% consistent with the character in the movie and seemed to drift into his character from Brooklyn 99. That is a great show and a great character so it doesn't really hurt the movie in general.
Now I'm going to write about a movie that's similar to Popstar, but the synopsis makes it sound like a movie I just made up right now. I assure you it's a real movie. That is, it's a real mockumentary. Oddly, in my local video store "It's All Gone Pete Tong" was errantly categorized as a real documentary even though it's about a drugged out EDM DJ from England who only rises to the height of his genre only after going deaf because it really doesn't make much of a difference to mindless dance music fans. The 2004 movie stars Paul Kaye who is best known as Thoros of Myr (of the men without banners) on Game of Thrones as well as memorable parts in Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell and as an incredibly humorous yet tragic junkie in the British series Pulling.
Paul Kaye's wikipedia page has one of the most unfortunate headers to a section with the title of "Post-Pennis Career" as his career seems to be demarcated by him playing a character called "Dennis Pennis."
Andy Samberg and the Lonely Island gang are incredibly talented and insanely funny. This will go on to be a cult comedy and it is also wise to include a part for another SNL teammate of the Lonely Island, Bill Hader whose comedic brilliance will live on beyond almost anyone of the last 15 years.
